The Appeals Body, Mr Nick Wachman (Chair), Mr Michael Hickey and Mr Noel McCaffrey convened at the Offices of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board on Thursday 23 July to consider the appeal of Mr Daniel King (Rider) against the decision of the Raceday Stewards at Killarney on 17 July 2026.
On the day, following the running of the Killarney Park 3-Y-O Maiden Hurdle, the Raceday Stewards enquired into an incident after the final hurdle involving Minella Buoy (GB) ridden by D King, placed second and No Bother Aoife, ridden by K C Sexton placed fourth, where it appeared No Bother Aoife ran short of room. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards found Mr King in breach of Rule 214 (careless riding) and having considered his record in this regard (second offence), they suspended him for four racedays.
The grounds of appeal lodged by Mr King was that the Raceday Stewards erred in their decision.
At the appeal hearing, evidence was heard from Mr King. The Appeals Body also watched a recording of the race.
In his evidence, Mr King explained that his horse picked up well coming to the last hurdle when his mount and, No Bother Aoife, ridden by Kevin Sexton, jumped slightly right before returning to their racing lines. Mr King stated that his mount was going forward while, in his opinion, Mr Sexton’s horse was beginning to fade. Mr King acknowledged that there was movement between the horses, however he suggested this was due to the nature of the race with the horses being inexperienced juvenile hurdlers that were green at times throughout the race.
Having considered the evidence, the Appeals Body dismissed the appeal and confirmed the sanction imposed by the Raceday Stewards on the day.
The case was presented by Mr King. The IHRB was represented by Mr Paul Deegan, IHRB Stipendiary Steward.
