First Time Jockey Applicants

All first time Applicants must complete an online self-assessment questionnaire.


Applicants General Practitioner must complete and return a Medical Form


Applicants must also attend an IHRB appointed Doctor for a Medical Examination


All first time applicants and licensed jockeys must complete a baseline Concussion Test, for details on the IHRB Concussion Protocol and approved centres please see here


A Fitness Assessment which includes the following four exercises must be completed during the IHRB Licensing Course by all first time applicants: 

Aerobic Test: Bleep Test > 9 

Upper Body Strength: Push Ups > 45; Chin Holds > 45 seconds (not mandatory to pass the fitness test) 

Trunk Strength: Plank required time of 2 minutes 30 seconds and a Standing Balance Test with a required time of 60 seconds 

Lower Body Strength: Wall Squat for 2 minutes 30 seconds and Squat Thrusts > 45 





Annual Licence Renewals

Annual Licence Renewals

An online self- assessment medical questionnaire must be completed.


A Medical Examination by an IHRB Doctor is required for the following licence holders: 

Professional National Hunt Jockey

Qualified Rider Category C over 35 years of age 

Qualified Rider Category A or B over 45 years of age 

Professional Flat Jockey over 40 years of age. 


Fitness Assessment by a Jockey Pathway Strength and Conditioning Coach for the following categories: 

Qualified Riders over 50 years of age

Flat Jockeys aged 50 or more with less than 10 rides in the previous 12 months 

National Hunt Jockeys aged 45 or more with less than 10 rides in the previous 12 months. 


Concussion Baseline Neuropsychological testing to be updated every two years or if a jockey has had a fall within the licensing year.
