Safety equipment will be regularly inspected by IHRB Medical Officers and Raceday Officials on race day, following a fall and on random inspections. 


A Jockey who fails to comply with the foregoing shall be reported to the Raceday Stewards. 

Safety equipment covered in this Policy includes:

  • Helmet
  • Body Protector
  • Mouthguards
  • Goggles
  • Boots
  • Breeches
  • Stirrups
  • Body Protectors must be for the standard approved by the IHRB. 
    This includes body protectors meeting EN13158:2018 Level 2, including but not limited to the Racesafe modified version RaceMotion2 or similar and approved or be certified safety standard EN13158:2018 Level 3. 
    • Body Protectors must be fitted to the correct size by trained retailers.  Do not purchase online or off the shelf without fitting.  

    • It must be worn with a harness (crotch strap) by Riders when weighing out, weighing in and during a Race. It must not have an attachment between the body protector and the saddle or girths. 

    • The Body Protector must not be modified in any way.  

    • Body protectors must be replaced after five years or if damaged. 

    • Body protectors must be in a serviceable condition and inspected regularly for damage. 

    • Level 3 body protector is recommended for riding out and Level 2 for the purposes of race riding. 

    • The 2009 version has now been withdrawn and is no longer being produced. Given the age this body protector may now have reached, rendering it less effective, it should no longer be worn even when riding out.  

  • Every Jockey shall, in all Races, wear white breeches of a type approved by the IHRB, unless written permission has been granted by the IHRB to wear breeches of a different colour or type. Breeches made from any of the materials listed below are approved. Standard Weight Polyester Breeches Black or white elastic bottoms. Closed via metal poppers and adjustment for the waist is made with velcro straps on the sides. Mud Race or Waterproof Breeches ¾ length or full-length Models ¾ type has the option of a black or white elastic bottom. Closed via metal poppers and adjustment for the waist is made with velcro straps on the sides. Ultra-Lite Breeches a very light, almost transparent Polyester material Black or white elastic bottoms. Closed via velcro and adjustment for the waist is made with velcro straps on the sides.
  • European Standard EN166:2002 for safety eyewear or an equivalent International Standard. In the interest of personal safety, the IHRB strongly recommends that protective goggles are used while race riding. Spectacles are prohibited and, where required, soft contact lenses should be worn.
  • Helmets must comply with at least two different international testing standards and should have evidence of Quality Testing from organisations such as BSI, INSPEC, SNELL, SEI.

    • Helmets should be inspected regularly for damage and replaced after significant falls, including any fall where a Jockey sustained a concussion or head impact. 

    • An IHRB Medical Officer or the Chief Medical Officer may direct that a helmet be replaced post inspection. 

    • The chin strap must pass under the jaw and be attached to the harness by a quick release buckle.  Metal hooks are expressly forbidden.   

    • All Jockeys when mounted on Horses must have their chin straps properly adjusted and fastened at all times.  

    • Helmets must be of the correct size for the individual Jockey.

    • American ASTM F1163: 2015 and any subsequent updates. 

     

    • American Snell E2016 and any subsequent updates (Please note: Snell combines a standard with subsequent quality testing; therefore, no additional quality testing mark is required)
  • While riding under any race under INHS Rules (all National Hunt jump racing) including Point to Point Steeplechases and INHSC Flat Races mouthguards must be:

    • individually designed and custom fitted 
    • at least 4mm thick
    • made in a dental office or a professional laboratory.  
    • Jockeys must be in possession of a mouth guard on mounting and must have it in use prior to the start of any Race.  
    • Mouthguards may be removed on pulling up. 
    • Exemptions to accommodate dental or orthodontic care may be granted at the discretion of the IHRB Chief Medical Officer. 
    • Any Jockey found not to have an acceptable mouthguard on any given day will NOT BE PERMITTED TO RIDE. 
    • Stock mouthguards or “boil and bite” mouthguards available to buy off the shelf are not accepted for use.  
    • You are advised to purchase two mouthguards in the event that one gets lost, or you forget to bring it to the Races.

  • Stirrups must be inspected regularly for any defects and replaced if any concerns. This is the responsibility of the Jockey. Please discuss with your Valet and purchase from a reputable source. The use of spurs during a race is prohibited. We recommended the following materials and manufacturers Aluminium Zilco, Globe Rex. Titanium Stirrups must be Platform Irons made from Silver Aluminium (Titanium) Persuader, Prestige MG. Carbon Fibre must be made with Carbon Fibre weave and resin and classified as Carbon Fibre Irons – manufactured primarily in U.S. and Japan by multiple manufactures.
National Hunt Boots
    • Made of a synthetic material and can have a coloured top, generally black, wine, red, blue or tan.  

    • The sole is 1.8mm, some have a small heel fitted. 

    • Patches on ankles are always synthetic. 

    • Zips are light weight.  

    • Colours are generally black, wine, red, blue or tan.  
    • The sole is 3mm and boots usually have a small heel 

    • Patches for the toes and ankles can be leather or synthetic, generally black to match the boots.  

    • Boots have standard or heavy-duty zips

    • Made from a synthetic material always black.  

    • One- piece construction with no ankle or toe patches.  

    • The sole is generally 1mm thick, there is no heel. 

    •  Zips are light weight.  

Flat Boots
    • Colours are generally black, wine, red, blue or tan.  

    • The soles are generally 1 to 1.8 mm thick and of a more flexible material than the material used in National Hunt boots.  

    • Patches can be leather or synthetic and should match the boot colour which is always black.  

    • Heels are generally not on flat boots but can be added if required.  

    • Boots are generally 2-3 inches shorter than the National Hunt boots 

    • They can be pull on/off or have zips.  

    • Made of a synthetic material and can have a coloured top, generally black, wine, red, blue or tan.  

    • The sole is rarely more than 1mm thick and in practice 0.5mm is the norm. 

    • Generally, do not have ankle or toe patches.  

    • They can be pull on/off or have light weight zips.  

    • Made from a synthetic material always black.  

    • One- piece construction with no ankle or toe patches.  

    • The sole is made of EVA Foam material.
