Pat Smullen Golf Classic in aid of the Drogheda Memorial Fund a resounding success

The Pat Smullen Golf Classic held in aid of the Drogheda Memorial Fund took place in Killeen Castle, Dunsany, Co. Meath on 13th September 2021, with the event remembering the nine time Irish champion jockey who was a major supporter of the annual event.

Established in 1893, the Drogheda Memorial Fund is one of the oldest charities in Ireland and was set up to provide assistance to current and former trainers and riders and their families in times of need. This was the tenth renewal of the annual Golf Classic event which was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic but it’s return on Monday was hailed as a great success by all those connected with the Charity and those in attendance.

A total of 32 teams from across the Irish racing industry, including Trainers, Jockeys, Owners, Turf Club Members, Stall Handlers and racing enthusiasts competed in the four-ball event with was won by Team Cool Dore with a total of 98 points, the same total as the Ballydoyle Racing team, however Team Cool Dore were successful on countback. It was similarly close for third place with the HRI Stall Handlers on 96 points finishing just ahead of Joe Keeling’s team on countback.

Reflecting on the day, Caroline Corballis, chairperson of the Committee of Management for the Drogheda Memorial Fund commented: “The Committee of Management would like to thank all the teams who played on the day and those who sponsored tee boxes. Such support is the life blood of the Charity and greatly assists us in providing our levels of support to our beneficiaries who are amongst the most vulnerable in our Racing industry. Special thanks must go to all the staff at Killeen Castle for their excellent running of the event on the day. The course was in excellent condition, as always, and ensured Killeen Castle was the perfect venue for such an event. Thanks also to Joe Keeling whose continued support each year for the event helps make it possible and ensures the event is a great fundraiser for the Charity each year.”

When the Drogheda Memorial Fund Golf Classic was launched in 2011, Pat Smullen kindly donated the Perpetual Cup which is presented to the winning team each year.

Caroline Corballis added: “Finally, we would like to add one special note of thanks to Frances Smullen who allowed Pat’s name to be associated with the event. Pat was always a great supporter of our Charity and he was very kind to donate the Perpetual Cup which is presented to the winning team each year. We all remember Pat at this time of his first anniversary especially and it is fitting he is linked to the Charity and this event going forward.”

1st – Team Cool Dore
