Veterinary Officer Position (Midlands-North Based)
17 September 2020The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) is the Regulatory Body for horseracing in Ireland, responsible for the integrity, reputation and licensing of Irish horseracing. A full time Veterinary Officer position has now arisen within the Veterinary/Anti-Doping Department which will be based in the IHRB Offices, the Curragh, Co. Kildare. This is a key role arising from a re-evaluation of the Department’s developing needs and presents a great opportunity to work as a regulatory veterinarian in racing.
JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Chief Veterinary Officer/Head of Anti-Doping (CVO), the Veterinary Officer will join the regulatory veterinary team, focussing on project and department support but with an element of field work. This role will be based both on and off the racecourse to include:
- Raceday Veterinary Officer duties
- Out-of-competition testing
- Other off-course testing, for example on non-licensed premises as an Authorised Officer
- Post-licensing stable inspections
Key responsibilities of the desk-based part of the role will include:
- Project/programme support to the CVO, for example: raceday injury data analysis, involvement in the stable inspection and anti-doping programmes, development of the Board’s biosecurity policies, and support to the Veterinary Committee
- Scientific, equine anti-doping and veterinary support to the Department, for example: technical point of contact, monitoring relevant information in media/literature, and supporting the field -based veterinary team with track-based projects and activities.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Qualified veterinary surgeon with relevant equine veterinary experience
- Experience in racing is desirable but not essential
- Knowledge of medicines legislation, particularly pertaining to horses
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills with proven evidence of leadership, and supervisory experience
- Able to work under pressure with common sense, discretion and diplomacy
- Able to work with confidential sensitive information
The successful applicant will be required to work throughout the country and the role will involve travel and work at weekends. The remuneration package will reflect the responsibilities of the position and experience of applicants.
