Turf Club honours Moyglare Stud for contribution to Irish Racing

Moyglare Stud was the surprise recipient of a silver salver which was presented to them at the annual Moyglare Dinner, held at the K Club, on Saturday last, 8 January, 2011.  The presentation which was made by the Turf Club was in acknowledgement of the contribution by Moyglare Stud and its owner Walter Haefner to the Irish bloodstock industry over almost 50 years.

In making the presentation, Mr John McStay, the Senior Steward of the Turf Club, not alone paid tribute to the Haefner family but also to Mr Stan Cosgrove who has run the Moyglare Stud in Ireland for many years. He said that the success of both Mr Haefner and Moyglare Stud had created a unique chapter in the history of Irish racing and the bloodstock industry in Ireland.

Walter Haefner, who originally took up horseriding for health reasons became so passionate about the sport he developed a lifelong passion for it. In 1962 he became European Amateur Champion jockey. A hugely successful businessman he approached his new 'hobby' with the same enthusiasm as he devoted to his business interests. This led to his purchase of the 440-acre Moyglare Stud Farm in Maynooth in 1962.  Since then the Stud has gone on to create a worldwide reputation. Thoroughbreds that have been raised there have won numerous Group One and classic races in England, Ireland, and France as well as important races at other venues in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong.

In 1973, the Curragh Racecourse honoured Mr Haefner's contribution to Irish racing by naming a race after Moyglare Stud and in1983 the race was elevated to Group One status. The Moyglare sponsorship is the second longest standing Group One sponsorship in the world. In 2009 the race became part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winner of the race now earns an automatic invitation to compete in that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
