Fairyhouse Meeting, 23rd February 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: the following riders replaced Andrew J. McNamara (injured):- M.P. Walsh rode Bluesea Cracker, trained by Mr. J. Motherway (fourth race) and B.J. Geraghty rode Rocco’s Hall, trained by Mr. E.J. O’Grady (fifth race); I.J. McCarthy replaced B.C. Byrne on Mountain Lough, trained by Mr. C. Byrnes (fifth race).
The Stewards granted permission for the sixth fence to be omitted from all Steeplechases at today’s meeting due to ground conditions.
028A Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed A.E. Lynch, rider of Fearless Falcon, placed fourth, concerning his use of the whip from the second last hurdle.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that the horse was a bit reluctant to give his all, but accepted he had been a little hard on him.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that A.E. Lynch had used his whip with excessive frequency, and having taken his excellent record in this regard into account, they severely cautioned him concerning his future use of the whip.
028B I.T.B.A. Fillies Scheme Novice Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into possible interference on the approach to the final hurdle involving the winner Stephanie Kate, ridden by D.J. Casey, and Definite Class, ridden by B.J. Cooper, placed second. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Stephanie Kate had caused interference to Definite Class and in doing so had improved her final placing as a result. The Stewards therefore reversed the placing of the first two horses. Amended result should now read: First: Definite Class and Second: Stephanie Kate.
The Stewards were also of the opinion that D.J. Casey had ridden improperly, and having taken his good record in this regard into account, they suspended him for four race days. (9th, 10th, 12th and 13th March).
Mr. C.F. Swan, trainer of Stephanie Kate, and Mr. D.T. Hughes, trainer of Definite Class, also attended this enquiry.
D.N. Russell, rider of My Cool Lady, trained by Mrs Denise Foster, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his reins broke and that he therefore pulled his mount up.
028D At The Races Bobbyjo Steeplechase & Mr. J. Motherway, trainer of Bluesea Cracker, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge scoped badly post race.
028F John McCarthy Memorial Hunters Steeplechase & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Boxer Georg, placed fourth, ridden by Mr. P.W. Mullins, and trained by Mr W P Mullins.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence Mr. P.W. Mullins stated that he was instructed to settle the horse in mid division and to try to get him to finish well, something he had failed to do when ridden prominently in the past. He stated everything went well until his mount made a mistake four fences from the finish, after which he was niggling at him to keep in touch. He had been trying to get the horse to finish well as the horse appears to struggle mid way through his races, but then gets a second wind and stays on again.
In his evidence Mr. W.P. Mullins stated that he wanted the horse to win here today as he would then be qualified for Cheltenham. He told the rider to ride the horse as he had done the last day, but felt that he had jumped himself into a far too prominent position at Ballyhack and as a result he was struggling from the fourth last fence. In addition he was of the opinion that the horse probably needs better ground than he had today.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Boxer Georg at the request of the Stewards and was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered, but cautioned Mr. P.W. Mullins that he must be seen to make a greater effort in the future.
028G Rockview (Q.R) I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards interviewed Mr. J.E. Reis, rider of Well Regarded, placed fifth, concerning his use of the whip in the straight.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that, in hindsight, he had been too hard on the animal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. Reis had used his whip with excessive frequency and also improperly, and having taken his record in this regard into account, they suspended him for two race days (9th and 10th March). The Stewards also ordered that Mr. Reis attend R.A.C.E. for a one day tuition on the correct use of the whip.
Thurles Meeting, 24th February 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: P.T. Enright replaced B.C. Byrnes on Mountain Lough, trained by Mr. C. Byrnes (third race).
PThe Stewards held an enquiry into the location of the outfield camera, which resulted in the failure to support the holding of an enquiry into the third race today. This was a recurrence of similar situations in the past when enquiries were either dropped or findings were compromised due to the lack of video evidence.
Evidence was heard from Mr. Declan Hoskins, Unit Manager, IRIS, which is the company responsible for supplying the Integrity pictures, reported to the Stewards that this track was originally serviced by an outfield camera mounted on a hoist and located on a hard core area at the extreme point of the far side of the course until the start of this season. He added that owing to continued budgetary contraints this facility has now been replaced by a van mounted camera and located in a different position because of the contours of the track. He was aware that previous Chairmen of Stewards at this track had expressed their concerns with the changed facility.
Having considered Mr. Hoskins’ evidence, the Stewards firstly expressed their satisfaction with the excellent work of his entire team but following continued reports to the Turf Club on the subject of this unacceptable camera service and the effect that it is having on the integrity of racing, this matter was being referred to the Turf Club for investigation.
031A Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Mares Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Paul Nolan, trainer of the winner Aura About You, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his horse compared with her previous run at Thurles on the 27th January 2011 where she finished eighth of nine finishers and was beaten 96 lengths by the winner For Bill.
Mr. James Nolan, representing the trainer, reported that this filly was highly rated over hurdles which influenced B.J. Geraghty in taking the ride the last day. However the mare failed to show anything from flagfall. He further commented that the yard had been under a cloud at that time and it has only been within the last week that the horses have begun to work well and this has been reflected in having three winners in the same period.
Having considered the report, the Stewards accepted the explanations offered.
031C Ballycahill Beginners Steeplechase & P. Carberry, rider of Not A Native (GB), trained by Mr. Ronan O’Dwyer, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not handle today’s ground. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Not A Native (GB) was found to be post race normal.
The Stewards fined Miss Clare Judith MacMahon, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Kiltartan in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provision of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
Miss Clare Judith MacMahon, trainer of Kiltartan, reported to the Turf Club Veterinary Officer that her charge burst a blood vessel during the running of this race.
031D Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle & P.W. Flood, rider of Smokey Joe Joe, trained by Mr. Kieran Purcell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled and was therefore pulled up.
031E Killinan Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards fined Mr. E. McNamara, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Hevelius (GB) in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provision of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
031F Prime Beef Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. John Joseph Murphy, trainer of the winner Whatsabillion, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his horse compared with the animal’s previous run at Limerick on the 26th January 2011 where he finished 11th of 17 finishers and was beaten 48 lengths by the winner Trendelenburg.
Mr. Oleksander Kulyk, representing the trainer, reported that this gelding appeared to have lost interest in racing and consequently he was fitted with cheek pieces today which appeared to rekindle his enthusiasm and allowed him to take a prominent position throughout.
Having considered the report, the Stewards accepted the explanation offered.
D.J. Bates, rider of Manger Hanagment, trained by Mr. P.J. Rothwell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount finished lame post race.
Navan Meeting, 25th February 2011
336B Navan Maiden Hurdle & J.R. Barry, rider of Raggletagglegypsy, trained by Mr. Eoin Doyle, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount lost its action on the approach to the home turn and was eased in the straight. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Raggletagglegypsy was found to be coughing post race.
336C Nobber Maiden Hurdle & S.G. McDermott, rider of Billybuster, trained by Mr. William Delahunty, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a respiratory noise in running.
N.J. O’Shea, rider of Camp Hope, trained by Mr. Conor O’Dwyer, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not act particularly well on today’s ground, was slightly hampered at the last hurdle, but stayed on past beaten horses close home.
M. Darcy, rider of Moymore Lad, trained by Mr. Mervyn Torrens, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not jump well throughout, choked turning for home and needs better ground.
336G Dunsany Mares I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards interviewed Mr. B.J. Foley, rider of Sunnydale High, placed second, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. Foley had used his whip with excessive frequency, and having taken his record in this regard into account, they suspended him for one race day (12th March).
Navan Meeting, 26th February 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: B.T. O’Connell replaced P.W. Flood (injured) on Glenturn, trained by Mrs Prunella Dobbs (sixth race).
337C www.navanracecourse.ie Handicap Steeplechase & A.P. Heskin, rider of Rebel Rock, trained by Mr. D.P. Keane, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was found to have a burst blood vessel post race.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Code Of The West, trained by Mr. C. Roche, was injured in running.
337D Leinster Handicap Steeplechase & Andrew J. McNamara, rider of Diophas (GER), trained by Mr. E.J. O’Grady, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not act on today’s ground. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Diophas (GER) was found to be post race normal.
337F Newgrange Handicap Steeplechase &The Stewards interviewed C.D. Maxwell, rider of Lusiad, placed fifth, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that C.D. Maxwell had used his whip with excessive frequency, and having taken his excellent record in this regard into account, they suspended him for one race day (12th March).
Leopardstown Meeting, 27th February 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: the following riders replaced P.W. Flood (injured):- B.J. Cooper rode Curling (FR), trained by Mr. D.T. Hughes (first race); T.J. Doyle rode Healys Bar, trained by Mr. Oliver McKiernan (fifth race) and R. Loughran rode Deal Done (FR), trained by Mr. D.T. Hughes (sixth race); B.J. Cooper replaced M. Darcy (injured) on Won In The Dark, trained by Sabrina J. Harty (second race).
027A Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed Mr. Patrick Joseph Hayes, trainer of Iron Hans (USA), concerning the poor performance of his horse in this race.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who advised the Stewards that he did not intend running his charge over hurdles again.
Following the running of this race Iron Hans (USA) was examined by the Turf Club Veterinary Officer at the request of the Stewards and was found to be lame.
Having considered the evidence, and having taken into account the veterinary report, the Stewards took no further action.
D.N. Russell, rider of Westmeath (GB), trained by Mr. Paul Nolan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran free and hung in the early stages.

Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that he was unaware of the specific regulation relating to hind shoes.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. McKiernan was in breach of Regulation 16 and they therefore severely cautioned him concerning his future responsibilities in this regard. Furthermore, the trainer was advised to familiarise himself with the Rule Book.
Mr. M.P. O’ Donnell, Chairman of the Acting Stewards, absented himself from this enquiry and as a result Mr. N.B. Wachman acted as Chairman.
