Turf Club and I.N.H.S. Committee

The Licensing Committee, Mrs. C. Corballis (in the Chair), Mr. T.L. Crawford and   Mr. J. Patrick Barry met at The Offices of The Turf Club, The Curragh, Co. Kildare on Tuesday, 8th February, 2011 and considered a breach of the conditions under which a licence was granted in relation to insurance. A severe warning and fine was issued to the following Trainer:  Mr. Shane Joseph Kelly €1,700.

The Licensing Committee, Mr. H.R.D. McCalmont (in the Chair), Mr. T. Rudd and Mr. S. McDonogh met at The Offices of The Turf Club, The Curragh, Co. Kildare on Tuesday, 8th February, 2011 and considered a breach of the conditions under which a licence was granted in relation to insurance.  Severe warnings and fines were issued to the following Trainers:  Mr. James G. Sheehan €300 and Mr. Thomas P. O’Connor €500.

Punchesotwn Meeting, 9th February 2011

The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of rider at this meeting: the following riders replaced S.E. Butler (injured):- P.D. Kennedy rode Monalynx, trained by Mr. Michael Monahan (fifth race) and J.P. Holly rode Bacmacs, trained by Mr. Seamus Fahey (seventh race).

The Stewards fined the following trainer €200 in respect of his non-runner: Mr. Denis Paul Murphy for The Speedy Man (Withdrawn by Order of the Stewards – passport irregularity).

022A Goffs Punchestown Festival Sale Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into possible interference from the final hurdle involving the winner Tofino Bay, ridden by D.N. Russell and Popcorn (FR), ridden by Mr. P.W. Mullins, placed second.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action.

022D Visit Punchestown.com Handicap Hurdle & P.W. Flood, rider of Old Magic, trained by Mr. David Martin Kelly, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran very free before being pulled up.

022E Follow Us On Facebook Novice Steeplechase & P. Townend, rider of Hampshire Express, trained by Mr. W.P. Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount gave a heave and made a respiratory noise in running. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Hampshire Express was found to be post race normal.

022G Punchestown Festival Goffs Sale Mares I.N.H. Flat Race & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Midnight Socialite, trained by Mr. T. Hogan, was found to be post race normal.

022H Glenfarclas P.P. Hogan Memorial Cross Country Steeplechase & The Stewards received a report from Mr. Andrew Tyrrell, Turf Club Veterinary Officer, that the vaccinations were not in order for The Speedy Man, trained by Mr. Denis Paul Murphy.
Evidence was heard from Ms. Bernadette Murphy, authorised representative for Mr. Murphy. 
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of The Speedy Man in accordance with Rule 90. Furthermore, Mr. Murphy was fined €200 through his representative.

Mr. P.A. King, rider of Olympe De Touzaine (FR), trained by Mr. J. Halley, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount burst a blood vessel in running and that he therefore pulled the horse up.

Thurles Meeting, 10th February 2011

023B Horse And Jockey Handicap Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. J.P. Fogarty, trainer of the winner Gentleman Jim, regarding the apparent improvement in form of this horse compared to the animal’s last run when beaten 57 lengths at Naas.
Mr. Fogarty stated that the horse made a very bad mistake the last day when still in contention and seemed to lose interest thereafter. He added that the horse can be temperamental and enjoyed being settled on his own on the outside today.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards accepted the explanations offered. 

The Stewards interviewed TJ Doyle, rider of the winner Gentleman Jim, concerning his use of the whip in the straight.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that T.J. Doyle had used his whip with excessive frequency and they therefore suspended him for one race day (24th February).

023C Holy Cross Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Miriam’s Dream, ridden by T.N. Bennett, and trained by Mr. A.J. Martin.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence T.N. Bennett stated that his instructions were to settle his mount in mid division and to get him jumping and travelling. He said that the horse was very difficult in the preliminaries and was reluctant to line up. He also stated that the horse gave a blow in running before staying on in the straight.
In his evidence Mr. Martin confirmed the instructions adding that he informed the rider to do his best without resorting to the whip given the horse’s tendency to be quirky. He also expressed his satisfaction with the ride.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that Miriam’s Dream was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

The Stewards interviewed Mr. P. Meany, trainer, regarding the poor performance of his horse Eochair in this race.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned.
Following the running of this race Eochair, was examined by the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, at the request of the Stewards, and was found to be post race normal.
Having considered the evidence, and having taken into account the horse’s previous form, the Stewards suspended Eochair for 60 days in accordance with Rule 14(iii). 

R.C. Colgan, rider of Eochair, trained by Mr. P. Meany, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a respiratory noise in running.

E.F. Power, rider of Mabuya (UAE), trained by Mr. R.P. Burns, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount jumped poorly before staying on at the finish.
 
023D Tipperary (Lady Riders) Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. John Joseph Hanlon, trainer of the winner Stowaway Pearl, regarding the apparent improvement in form of this horse compared to the animal’s last run when beaten 82 lengths at Tramore.
Mr. Hanlon stated that the horse disappointed him at Tramore over two and a half miles, but possibly failed to see out the trip on that occasion. He added that the horse can be quirky and obviously benefited from the application of blinkers for the first time today.
The Stewards also considered a report from Mr. Noel O’Brien , Senior Turf Club National Hunt Handicapper.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered. 

Leopardstown Meeting, 12th February 2011

021A Tote Jackpot Races 3 to 6 Spring Juvenile Hurdle & D.N. Russell, rider of Toner D’Oudairies (FR), trained by Mr. Gordon Elliott, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount whinnied in running.

021B Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Mares Handicap Hurdle & P. Carberry, rider of Cool Quest, trained by Mr. Terence O’Brien, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not get a clear run, met with interference and stayed on well in the closing stages.

021E paddypower.com iPhone App Handicap Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Rahan De Marcigny (FR), trained by Mr. Noel Meade, was found to be post race normal.

021F Hennessy Gold Cup & The Stewards granted permission for Made In Taipan, trained by Mr. Thomas Mullins, not to participate in the parade prior to the start of this race as the horse had run very free to the start of his last two races.

S.J. Hassett, rider of Let Yourself Go, trained by Mr. Adrian Maguire, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount burst a blood vessel in running and that he therefore pulled the horse up.

021H Kilternan (Pro/Am) I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards interviewed G.N. Fox, rider of Jay Cee Alexander, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that G.N. Fox was in breach of the guidelines in relation to his use of the whip in that he continued to hit his mount when out of contention and when his chance of winning or being placed was clearly gone. The Stewards therefore suspended him for four race days (26th, 27th February and 2nd and 5th March).

Navan Meeting, 13th February 2011

The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: T.C. Carroll replaced A.P. Heskin (unwell) on Brookville, trained by Mr. P. Cashman (sixth race).

The Stewards fined the following trainer €200 in respect of his non-runner: Mr. Gordon Elliott for  Ballymak (late withdrawal – stone bruise).

025A Marge Browne Memorial Maiden Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Macareo (GER), trained by Mr. Noel Meade, was found to have a burst blood vessel post race.

025C Navan Racecourse Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Take A Shot, ridden by D.G. Hogan, and trained by Mr. F. Flood.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and from Mr. F. Flood Jnr., representing the trainer.
In  his evidence D.G. Hogan stated that he was instructed to sit mid division early, keep his mount on  the best of the ground and to try to get the horse to finish well. He also stated that his mount jumped badly left, particularly in the latter stages of the race, and finished well passing tired horses in the closing stages. He said he informed Mr. Flood that the horse may benefit from a longer trip.
In his evidence Mr. Flood Jnr. confirmed the instructions and stated that this animal has had his training problems in the past and that he was pleased with both horse and rider today. However, he said he was concerned with the animal jumping left.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, stating that Take A Shot was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

025D Irish Stallion Owners European Breeders Fund Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into possible interference on the approach to the final hurdle involving the winner Sweeney Tunes (GB), ridden by D.N. Russell, and Dantes King, ridden by D.J. Condon, placed second.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings. They did, however, advise D.N. Russell to ride with more care in the future.

The Stewards interviewed Mr. Gordon Elliott, trainer of Dantes King, regarding the late arrival of his horse into the parade ring for this race.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that this animal proved to be quite difficult to saddle today and that his horses are normally in the parade ring in good time and he apologised to the Stewards.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards cautioned Mr. Elliott to have his runners in the parade ring in good time for the public to view in the future.

The Stewards interviewed Mr. P. Corcoran, trainer of Definite Print, regarding the poor performance of this horse.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that this animal has shown ability at home and won a schooling race in the past.
Following the running of this race Definite Print was examined by the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, at the request of the Stewards, and was found to be post race normal.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards suspended Definite Print from running for a period of 60 days.

B.T. O’Connell, rider of Definite Print, trained by Mr. P. Corcoran, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount choked in running, did not handle today’s ground and that he therefore pulled the horse up.

P.E. Corbett, rider of Oscar Barton, trained by Mr. Paul W. Flynn, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount choked in running.

025E Flyingbolt Novice Steeplechase & The Stewards granted permission for fence number five to be omitted from this race and from the Ten Up Novice Steeplechase at today’s meeting due to ground conditions.

The Stewards enquired into possible interference from the second last fence involving the winner Saludos, ridden by R.M. Power, and Montan (FR), ridden by P. Carberry, placed second.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action. The Stewards also complimented both riders for the accuracy of their evidence.
