317F Weatherbys Ireland GSB Handicap Steeplechase & Mr. Denis Gerard Hogan, trainer of Drive On Jim, reported to the Office of the Governing Bodies on Friday 16th December that his charge was found to have a pulled muscle in his hind quarters post race.
Gowran Park Meeting, 15th December 2011
318A Christmas Championship At Gowran Park Golf Course 3-y-o Hurdle & N.P. Madden, rider of Mulleady, trained by Mr. A.J. Martin, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not act on today’s ground.
T.P. Treacy, rider of Hollymount King, trained by Mr. S.J. Treacy, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a respiratory noise in running and did not act on today’s ground. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Hollymount King was found to have a grazed off fore cannon post race. Samples were taken for analysis.
318B Christmas Vouchers At Gowran Park Golf Shop Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Kilcrea, trained by Mr. James Joseph Mangan, and ridden by P.F. Mangan.
Evidence was heard from the trainer and rider concerned.
In his evidence P.F. Mangan stated that his instructions were to settle his mount in mid division, creep into the race and to try and be as close as possible turning into the straight. He stated that he ended up further back than he had intended after his mount jumped the first few hurdles deliberately before staying on in the straight under a hands and heels drive.
In his evidence Mr. James Joseph Mangan confirmed the instructions and added that he would have preferred to see the horse ridden more prominently. However, he said that overall he was satisfied with the ride in that the jockey held the horse together well on today’s ground. He concluded by saying that Kilcrea is still a big weak horse who should improve when stepped up in trip on better ground.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that Kilcrea was found to be post race normal and samples were taken for analysis.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanations offered. However, the Stewards found P.F. Mangan to be in breach of Rule 272 and severely cautioned him concerning the accuracy of his post race report which was deemed to be misleading.
318C Goresbridge Novice Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed D.N. Russell, rider of the winner Make A Track, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who accepted that in hindsight he was excessive with the whip but stated that his mount responded well in the tight finish.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.N. Russell was in breach of Regulation 10 in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency and without giving his mount a chance to respond. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for two race days (31st December and 1st January 2012).
318E Gowran Park Thanks All Its Customers In 2011 Mares Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. John J. Walsh, trainer of the winner Knockbrack Vic, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s previous run at Limerick where she was beaten 84 lengths.
Mr. Walsh reported that his charge is an inconsistent performer who has not won for over a year. He expressed his surprise with today’s win but could only put it down to the more positive and forceful ride.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.
318G 26th January 2012 – Thyestes Day At Gowran Park I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards enquired into an incident just past the stands involving Silver Circle, ridden by Mr. J.T. Carroll, placed fifth, and Whatdreamsrmadeof, ridden by Mr. P.T. Foley, unplaced, after it appeared the latter clipped heels and stumbled.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the incident was accidental in nature and were unable to apportion blame to any rider. The Stewards therefore took no further action.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Uptick Rule, trained by Mr. P.J. Rothwell, was found to be distressed post race. Samples were taken for analysis.
Dundalk Meeting, 16th December 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: A.P. Thornton rode Cathrine De Medici (reserve), trained by Mr. Liam Roche (sixth race) and R.P. Whelan rode Accompanist (GB) (reserve), trained by Mr. T.G. McCourt (eighth race).
The Stewards fined the following trainer €320 in respect of his non-runner: Mr. C.F. Swan for Maggie Neary (late withdrawal – second offence).
319A www.dundalkstadium.com Handicap & Mr. T. Hogan, trainer of Gordon Lord Byron, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge was struck into behind in running.
319B Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden & C.D. Hayes, rider of Aegean Sky, trained by Mr. Kevin Prendergaset, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran green in this race. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Aegean Sky was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
319E Group Bookings At Dundalk Rated Race & The Stewards enquired into possible interference in the closing stages involving the winner Westtower Boy, ridden by W.J. Lee, Fantasy King (GB), ridden by P.J. Smullen, placed second, Baitsileir, ridden by R.P. Whelan, placed third, Reggae Rock, ridden by M.C. Hussey, placed fifth, and Ultra Cool, ridden by J.P. Murtagh, unplaced.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned and from Mr. Ger Flynn representing apprentice R.P. Whelan.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Fantasy King (GB) had caused interference to both Baitsileir and Reggae Rock, but were satisfied that he had not improved his placing over those two horses in doing so. The Stewards therefore made no alteration to the Judge’s placings. The Stewards were, however, of the opinion that P.J. Smullen had accidentally caused the interference and took no further action.
319G(i) [email protected]">[email protected] Handicap (Division One) & The Stewards interviewed C.P. Hoban, rider of Cailin Coillteach (GB), unplaced, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that C.P. Hoban was in breach of Regulation 10 2 (b) in that he had continued to hit his mount after her chance of winning or being placed was clearly gone and Regulation 10 2 (f) in that he hit the horse with excessive force. Having taken his excellent record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (6th January 2012).
319G(ii) [email protected]">[email protected] Handicap (Division Two) & K.J. Manning, rider of Sughera, trained by Mr. A.J. Martin, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not quicken when asked.
Fairyhouse Meeting, 17th December 2011
320C Fairyhouse Membership 2012 Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into possible interference after the final hurdle involving the winner, Bay Of Kotor, ridden by A.E. Lynch, and Ferry Point, ridden by A.P. Thornton, placed second.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion, that while accidental interference had occurred, they were not satisfied that the winner had improved his finishing position in relation to the runner-up and they therefore made no alteration to the Judge’s placing and took no further action.
320D Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Beginners Steeplechase & E.J. O’Connell, rider of Good Luck Chuck, trained by Mr. David Martin Kelly, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was found to have a burst blood vessel post race.
320F New Years Day 2012 At Fairyhouse Handicap Steeplechase & The Stewards granted permission for the first fence in the back straight to be omitted in this race and in the New Value Hospitality Packages At Fairyhouse Beginners Steeplechase due to the low elevation of the sun.
The Stewards interviewed G.N. Fox, rider of Saddlers Native, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that G.N. Fox was in breach of Regulation 10 2(f) in that he used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his recent record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for fourteen race days.
R.C. Colgan, rider of Knocklayde Euro, trained by Mr. J. J. Lambe, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled and was therefore pulled up.
320G Merry Christmas From Fairyhouse (Pro/Am) I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards interviewed Mr. G.B. Watters, rider of Tyrones Quest, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. Watters was in breach of Regulation 10 2 (b) in that he continued to use his whip when his chance of winning or being placed had clearly gone. The Stewards therefore suspended him for ten race days (31st December, 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 19th and 21st January 2012).
Navan Meeting, 18th December 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: B.J. Cooper replaced D.E. Mullins (see enquiry) on Battling Boru, trained by Mr. Anthony Mullins (third race).
321C Navan Novice Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Mount Benbulben, trained by Mr. Gordon Elliott, was found to be post race normal.
321D Christmas Cracker Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Anthony Mullins, trainer of the winner Battling Boru, regarding the apparent improvement in form of this charge compared with the horse’s previous run at Gowran where where he finished 16th of 19 runners.
Mr. Mullins reported that he was surprised with today’s win and the only explanation he could offer was that the horse may not have handled the very deep conditions at Gowran last time and that the slightly better conditions today may have resulted in the animal returning to form.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Bacher Boy, trained by Mr Gordon Elliott, was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
Following an inspection of the course by the Acting Stewards, the steeplechase track was found to be unfit for racing due to frost patches. The Stewards therefore cancelled the remaining three races at this fixture in the interest of safety.
