The Licensing Committee Mrs. C. Corballis (in the Chair), Mr. J. Patrick Barry and Mrs. Jill Farrell met at the Offices of the Turf Club, The Curragh, Co. Kildare on Tuesday, 6th December, 2011 and considered a breach of the conditions under which a license was granted in relation to insurance. A severe warning and a 400 euro fine was issued to the following trainer: Mr. L. Young.
The following trainer was fined €200 for the non-notification of a Veterinary Certificate in accordance with the provisions of Rule 194 (v) (vi):- Mr. James Leavy for Massyoun (FR) (injured) at Fairyhouse on 3rd December.
Clonmel Meeting, 8th December 2011
313B Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Mares Maiden Hurdle & Mr. John W. Nicholson, trainer of Great Oak, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge never travelled in this race.
P.W. Flood, rider of Mai Maisie, trained by Mr. Sean Byrne, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount did not act on today’s ground and was therefore pulled up.
313C Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle & B.R. Dalton, rider of Shela House (GB), trained by Mr. J.H. Culloty, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled on today’s ground. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Shela House (GB) was found to be coughing post race. Samples were taken for analysis.
A.J. Fox, rider of Tornant, trained by Mr. F. Flood, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled in this race.
313D Clonmel Racecourse Supporters Club Only €85 Beginners Steeplechase & D.J. Casey, rider of Victrix Gale, trained by Mr. A.J. Martin, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was unable to go the early pace and made a few mistakes before staying on in the closing stages.
M.P. Madden, rider of Highdownhill (NZ), trained by Mr. Niall Madden, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount lost his action.
313E Kilsheelan Beginners Steeplechase & D.N. Russell, rider of Big Game Hunter, trained by Mr. M.F. Morris, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his saddle slipped and that he therefore pulled his mount up.
313F Parade Ring Snack Bar Handicap Steeplechase & D.N. Russell, rider of Doc O’Donnell, trained by Mr. Timothy O’Callaghan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a bad mistake at the second last fence and was pulled up.
M.J. Ferris, rider of Waltzing Tornado, trained by Mr. M. Keane, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled on today’s ground.
B.F. Cawley, rider of Island Peak, trained by Mr. Michael John O’Connor, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled on today’s ground. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Island Peak was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
Dundalk Meeting, 9th December 2011
The Stewards fined the following trainer €200 in respect of his non-runner: Mr. J.S. Bolger for An Spailpin Fanach (USA) (off feed).
314B Group Discount At Dundalk Stadium Apprentice Handicap & The Stewards enquired into the possibility that J.P. O’Brien, rider of the winner Elusive Ridge, had moved across before the marker poles.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that J.P. O’Brien was in breach of Rule 211 in that he had moved across before the marker poles. The Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (23rd December).
The Stewards enquired into an incident shortly after the turn into the straight involving Money Trader, ridden by R.P. Whelan, and Alheera, ridden by C.T. Keane, both unplaced, after it appeared that Syrian (GB), ridden by S.A. Gray, clipped heels and unseated the rider.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned in the presence of Mr. Kieran Murphy, representing Mr. S.M. Duffy, trainer of Syrian (GB), and Mr. Bertie Butler, representing Sarah Dawson, trainer of Alheera.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that C.T. Keane had ridden carelessly (Rule 214) and they therefore suspended him for three race days (23rd December 2011, 6th and 13th January 2012).
314C Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund (C&G) Maiden & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Crystal Wings, trained by Mr. Paul W. Flynn, was found to be lame behind post race. Samples were taken for analysis.
M.C. Hussey, rider of Captain Joy, trained by Tracey Collins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran out of racing room in the straight and was forced to check.
The Stewards fined Mr. Edward Lynam, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Muck’N’Brass in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
314D(i) [email protected]">[email protected] Handicap (Division One) & The Stewards enquired into an incident approximately two furlongs from the finish involving Bramante (GB), ridden by K.J. Manning, placed third, Mctaggart, ridden by W.J. Supple, and Biting Back, ridden by N.G. McCullagh, both unplaced, after it appeared that the latter two horses both received some interference.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards severely cautioned K.J. Manning concerning his future riding.
314D(ii) [email protected]">[email protected] Handicap (Division Two) & J.A. Heffernan, rider of Almadaa (GB), trained by Mr. David Marnane, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran out of racing room in the straight.
A.P. Thornton, rider of Orafinitis, trained by Mr. Desmond McDonogh, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount had to check slightly in the back straight.
314E www.dundalkstadium.com Handicap & The Stewards received a request from Mr. Dermot Anthony McLoughlin, trainer of Indian Luck, to substitute the nominated rider D.R. McCabe with G.J. Phillips.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that he booked the nominated rider through his agent Mr. R. Tierney but was subsequently informed that the rider was abroad and was therefore unable to fulfil the engagement.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards allowed the request in accordance with Regulation 3, but referred the matter to the chief executive of the Turf Club for further investigation.
314F Follow Dundalk On Facebook Handicap & K.C. Sexton, rider of Citizenship (GB), trained by Mrs John Harrington, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount hung in running and did not act on today’s surface. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Citizenship (GB) was found to be lame behind post race. Samples were taken for analysis.
Navan Meeting, 10th December 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: A.P. Thornton replaced E.F. Power (see enquiry) on Pennys Tune, trained by Ms. Florence Mills (first race).
The Stewards fined the following trainer €200 in respect of his non-runner: Mr. Sean Byrne for Fourinone (withdrawn – injured in transit).
315A Kells Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards received a request from Ms. Florence Mills, trainer of Pennys Tune, to substitute the nominated rider E.F. Power with A.P. Thornton as the former was unable to weigh out at the correct weight as per terms of Rule 195 (i).
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned and from E.F. Power.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards allowed the substitution and severely cautioned E.F. Power concerning his future responsibilities in this regard.
315C Meath Novice Hurdle & The Stewards fined Mr. John C. McConnell, trainer, €65 for failing to fit a tongue tie to his charge Springfield Way prior to entering the parade ring for this race.
T.P. Treacy, rider of Jock’s Delight, trained by Mr. H. Smyth, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount reared and unseated him after the tape was released. He said he remounted and raced on, but that his mount could not get competitive.
315D Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Novice Steeplechase & Mr. P.W. Mullins, rider of Popcorn (FR), trained by Mr. W.P. Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was struck into in running and never travelled thereafter. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Popcorn (FR), was found to have two small haemotomas on his girth area post race. Samples were taken for analysis.
315E Navan Golf Course Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed A.E. Lynch, rider of Berties Dream, placed second, concerning his use of the whip from the third last fence.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that A.E. Lynch was in breach of Regulation 10 (2) in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his recent record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for two race days (31st December and 1st January 2012).
315F Proudstown Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed Mr. J.J. King, rider of the winner Powerstation concerning his use of the whip from the second last hurdle.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. King was in breach of Regulation 10 (2) in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency, and also Regulation 10 (3) in that he failed to give his mount a chance to respond to the whip. Having taken his good record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (31st December, 1st and 2nd January 2012).
D.N. Russell, rider of Toner D’Oudairies (FR), trained by Mr. Gordon Elliott, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his saddles slipped and he was unseated.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Irish Soul, trained by Mr. J. Motherway, was struck into on his left hind and was found to have Diaphraghatic Flutter or ‘Thumps’ post race. Samples were taken for analysis and the animal was subsequently examined endoscopically.
315G Navan 2012 Membership On Sale I.N.H. Flat Race & Mr. D.F. Bourke, rider of Kings Artist, trained by Mrs Louise Parkhill, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount lost her action and was pulled up.
Cork Meeting, 11th December 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: S.J. Gray rode Moving On (reserve), trained by Mrs Marian Flavin (fifth race).
316A corkracecourse.ie Maiden Hurdle & N.J. O’Shea, rider of Millenarys Lady, trained by Mr. Thomas Cooper, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran on well in the closing stages having met with interference turning out of the back straight.
B.C. Byrnes, rider of Gortroe, trained by Mr. C. Byrnes, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran very green, jumped deliberately and made a respiratory noise in running. He also stated that, in his opinion, the animal needs a longer trip.
P.T. Enright, rider of Thank Your Stars, trained by Mr. M.A. Cahill, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a respiratory noise in running.
316B Cork Stayers Novice Hurdle & Miss K.J. Harrison, rider of Days Of Glory, trained by Mrs C. Harrison, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that her mount made a respiratory noise after jumping the final hurdle.
316E mallow.ie Handicap Hurdle & D.G. Hogan, rider of Norah Starr, trained by Mr. Denis Gerard Hogan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a mistake at the first hurdle down the back straight and never travelled thereafter. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Norah Starr was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
B.T. O’Connell, rider of Passing Through (GB), trained by Mr. Philip Fenton, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount travelled well in the early stages, but hung right, heaved and emptied in the closing stages. Samples were taken for analysis.
316F Follow Us On Twitter Novice Handicap Hurdle & D.N. Russell, rider of Dbanks, trained by Mr. Eamonn Fehily, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled.
316G Racing Home For Easter Festival (Pro/Am) I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Saddlers Luck, ridden by H.D. Dunne, and trained by Mr. C. Byrnes.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence H.D. Dunne stated that his instructions were to drop the horse out and to try and settle him bearing in mind that the animal can be free and may not see out the trip. He added that the horse ran green and was on and off the bridle, while he also ran in snatches. The rider also explained that he got a sod of turf in his eye early in the straight and had to momentarily stop riding, but thereafter pushed his mount out to the line. He concluded by sayingthat the horse carried his head high throughout and hung badly.
In his evidence Mr. Byrnes confirmed the instructions and expressed his satisfaction with the ride.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that Saddlers Luck was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the trainer’s explanations, but severely cautioned H.D. Dunne to be seen to make more of an effort in future.
Punchestown Meeting, 11th December 2011
317B I.N.H. Stallion Owners European Breeders Fund Novice Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed Mr. Eddie Ryan, authorised representative of Mr. Henry de Bromhead, trainer of Casa Jove, regarding the late arrival of this horse into the Parade Ring, which contributed to a delay to the start of this race.
Evidence was heard from Mr. Ryan who stated that the animal was extremely difficult to saddle and he apologised to the Stewards for the delay.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards reminded Mr. de Bromhead, through his representative, of his responsibilities in this regard.
317D John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Steeplechase & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Tranquil Sea, trained by Mr. E.J. O’Grady, was found to be post race normal.
317E Ladbrokes Supporting Longford GAA Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Michael Hourigan, trainer of the winner Crash, concerning the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horses previous run at Punchestown on the 26th of October where the animal finished fifth of nine runners and was beaten 42 lengths.
Mr. Hourigan stated that this horse is very difficult to train and has numerous little niggling problems. He said the horse had been almost ready to run on a few occasions since his last run only to meet with a setback. He said the horse was running in his first chase at Punchestown last time and he made a number of jumping errors. He concluded by saying that things went well for the horse today and any apparent improvement in form was down to his improved jumping.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
The Stewards wished to enquire into the running and riding of Whatever Jacksays, ridden by R.C. Colgan, and trained by Mr. Oliver McKiernan.
Mr. McKiernan was called for over the loudspeaker repeatedly and it was eventually established that he had left the racetrack to return home to collect some horses for schooling after racing. Subsequently, the Stewards tried to make further contact but Mr. McKiernan had not returned to the track at this stage.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that Whatever Jacksays was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
As the trainer was unavailable, the Stewards referred the matter to the Referrals Committee.
The Stewards fined Mr. Paul W. Flynn, trainer, €65 for failing to fit a tongue tie to his charge Oscar Barton prior to entering the parade ring for this race.
B.J. Geraghty, rider of Big Eared Fran, trained by Mr. E.J. O’Grady, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount blew up in the back straight.
317G Valleymount GAA Supporting Punchestown (Pro/Am) I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards interviewed Mr. C.L. Murphy, rider of Millieann, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. Murphy was in breach of Regulation 10 2 (b) in that he had used his whip when his chance of winning or being placed had clearly gone. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for four race days (26th, 27th, 28th and 29th December).
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Pat Garrett, trained by Mr. Noel Meade, was found to be post race normal.
The Stewards fined Mr. Laurence James Butler, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Ask Joe in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
