Leaving the back straight, he had just got her to switch off and the field quickened ahead of her, he let her have her head to close the gap, but she ran green and ducked inwards. He got a hold of her head again and ran on past tired horses up the homestraight.

In his evidence G.F. Carroll stated that his instructions were to jump smart, try to settle in mid division, hold onto him for as long as possible and deliver a challenge late. He stated that they went a good gallop, but he was trying to get him to drop the bridle and settle, he travelled well and tried to coax him along without putting the gun to his head. He said when he put him into the race late on, he had not the clearest of runs. In hindsight he felt he should not have taken him back after the first bend as the field did not come back to him as he had hoped.
In his evidence Mr. Martin confirmed the instructions and outlined the many problems he has had with this horse, who has a history of bleeding and has problems with his heart. He said the horse needs everything to drop right for him because in the past if he comes off the bridle early he flattens out. Mr. Martin felt satisfied with the ride except he felt G.F. Carroll had him dropped out too far. He stated that he has had numerous vets check him and no single problem can be identified with the horse. Tonight he was scoped and was clear of blood in his lungs but his throat was inflamed maybe as a result of swallowing kickback. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that Avanti Albert was found to be coughing post race, maybe as a result of swallowing kickback but was otherwise post race normal.
