Clonmel Meeting, 10th November 2011
293E European Breeders Fund T.A. Morris Memorial Mares Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed D.N. Russell, rider of Shop DJ, placed fourth, after it appeared he dismounted and unsaddled his mount after the winning line and before reaching the parade ring.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that after his mount fell at the final fence, he spoke to the horse’s trainer who informed him that the horse appeared sound and that only two horses had finished. He said that, in the interest of gaining black type, he remounted and went past the wining post. He then dismounted and unsaddled before returning to the weigh room. He added that had he known he was only going to be fourth he would not have remounted.
Following the running of this race Shop DJ was examined by the Turf Club veterinary officer at the request of the Stewards and was found to be post race normal.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards accepted the explanation offered, but cautioned the rider concerning the manner in which he fulfilled his duties.
Dundalk Meeting, 11th November 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: The following riders replaced E.J. McNamara (injured):- R. Coakley rode Joe Eile, trained by Mr. G.M. Lyons (fourth race); G.F. Carroll rode Mid Mon Lady, trained by Mr. H. Rogers (fifth race) and L.F. Roche rode The Pier, trained by Mr. James G. Murphy (seventh race); S. Foley replaced G.F. Carroll (original mount a non-runner) on Hebridean, trained by Mrs John Harrington (fifth race).
294A www.dundalkstadium.com Nursery Handicap & The Stewards interviewed P. Shanahan, rider of the winner Banner Road, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his mount was hanging inwards, but that in hindsight he accepted that he was excessive with his whip.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found P. Shanahan to be in breach of Regulation 10 in that he had used his whip with excessive force and frequency. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended P. Shanahan for two race days (25th November and 2nd December).
294B Follow Dundalk On Facebook Handicap & The Stewards interviewed R.P. Cleary, rider of Heir To The Mint (USA), placed third, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his mount was hanging outwards, but that in hindsight he accepted that he was excessive with his whip.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards found R.P. Cleary to be in breach of Regulation 10 in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency without giving his mount a chance to respond. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (25th November).
294C Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. David Wachman, trainer of the winner Hot Bed, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared to the horse’s last run at Roscommon.
Mr. Malik Ahmad, representing Mr. Wachman, reported that the horse did not handle the testing conditions at Roscommon and was subsequently given a break. He added that the quicker surface today seemed to suit the horse and helped him return to form.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered and took no further action.
The Stewards informed Mr. G.M. Lyons, trainer of Fluidity (GB), that his charge would have to be re-certified before being declared to run from stalls again.
N.G. McCullagh, rider of Zalantoun, trained by Mr. John M. Oxx, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount appeared unusually quiet before this race. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Zalantoun was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
294D [email protected]">[email protected] Apprentice Handicap & The Stewards informed Mr. John C. McConnell, trainer of Black N Brew (USA), that his charge would have to be re-certified before being declared to run from stalls again.
Mr. Gerard Keane, trainer of No Trimmings, reported to the Turf Club Veterinary Officer that his charge scoped badly post race. This was subsequently confirmed to the Stewards by the Turf Club Veterinary Officer.
Mr. Thomas James, trainer of Kate Greenaway, reported to the Turf Club Veterinary Officer that his charge was found to be coughing post race. This was subsequently confirmed to the Stewards by the Turf Club Veterinary Officer.
294E Carlingford Stakes & J.A. Heffernan, rider of Acushladear, trained by Mr. Patrick Tallis, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran out of racing room in the straight.
294F Group Discounts At Dundalk Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident early in the straight involving Global Recovery, ridden by K.J. Manning, Badger Or Bust, ridden by J.A. Heffernan, and Majestic Bright (GB), ridden by C.P. Hoban, all unplaced, after it appeared that Humiliation (GB), ridden by L.F. Roche, had to check.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that J.A. Heffernan was in breach of Rule 214, in that he had ridden carelessly. Having taken his recent record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (25th November). The Stewards also severely cautioned L.F. Roche concerning the accuracy of his evidence.
Naas Meeting, 12th November 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: D.J. Condon replaced E.J. McNamara (injured) on Little Green, trained by Mr. E. McNamara (third race) and N.P. Madden replaced Ms. K. Walsh (unwell) on That’ll Do Me, trained by Mr. T.M. Walsh (sixth race).
The Stewards fined the following trainer €200 in respect of his non-runner: Mr. Peter Casey for Equation (late withdrawal – change in ground conditions).
295C Naas Vet Panel Supporting Racing Fishery Lane Hurdle & D.J. Condon, rider of Little Green, trained by Mr. E. McNamara, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount hung badly, ducked and ran out.
295D Tipper Road Beginners Steeplechase & S.G. McDermott, rider of Oscar Barton, trained by Mr. Paul W. Flynn, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount dived at a fence in the back straight and that he was unsure about the gelding’s wellbeing on the final bend. He said he eased the horse at that stage before asking him for another effort from the second last fence.
The Stewards fined Mr. Noel Henley, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Heavenly Brook in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
295E Kill Maiden Hurdle & A.J. McNamara, rider of Star Neuville (FR), trained by Mr. John Joseph Hanlon, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount felt flat in the latter stages. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Star Neuville (FR) was found to be post race normal. The trainer subsequently reported to the Stewards’ Secretaries at Limerick on 13th November that his charge was unsettled before the start of the race and became very agitated prior to leaving the racecourse to return home.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Green River Dancer, trained by Miss Maura McGuinness, was found to be clinically abnormal post race.
295F Event Hire At Naas Racecourse Handicap Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that That’ll Do Me, trained by Mr. T.M. Walsh, was found to have a burst blood vessel post race.
I.J. McCarthy, rider of First Impressions, trained by Mr. Michael Mulvany, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount cocked his jaw on the bend past the stands, ran out and dislodged him.
295G Thoroughbred County Novice Handicap Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. F. Flood, trainer of the winner Miss Pepperpot, regarding the
apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the filly’s previous run at Galway, on the 22nd October, where she finished seventh of 11 finishers and was beaten 56 lengths by the winner The Bishop Looney.
Mr F.J. Flood, Authorised Representative of Mr. F.Flood, reported that this mare was returning to action at Galway following an almost six months break and was racing over the minimum trip of two miles in very testing underfoot conditions that day. He felt that it was a poor quality race today and was made easier by the departure of Hold Em Cowboy early in the contest. He also said that the extra distance of two and a half miles was also of benefit to the mare today.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
The Stewards requested a report from Mr. J.T. R. Dreaper, trainer of Minor Power, placed second, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s previous run at Downpatrick on the 15th October, where he finished last of ten finishers and was beaten 79 lengths by the winner Streamstown.
Mr. Dreaper reported that, prior to his Downpatrick run, this gelding had fallen at Listowel before being remounted to finish last. He felt that the gelding’s confidence was affected and the horse disappointed again when running at Downpatrick. As a consequence the animal was schooled intensely. He said the horse ran today off a low weight in this his first handicap and in a race that he felt was of a very ordinary standard.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Ardglen, trained by Mr. John Joseph Hanlon, was found to be blowing hard post race.
Navan Meeting, 13th November 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: R. Loughran replaced E.J. McNamara (injured) on Thanks For Smoking, trained by Mr. Michael Cunningham (fourth race) and R.M. Power replaced Andrew J. McNamara (injured) on Baily Green, trained by Mr. M.F. Morris (sixth race).
Limerick Meeting, 13th November 2011
The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: A.P. Crowe replaced E.J. O’Connell (injured) on Niki Royal (FR), trained by Mr. Barry Potts (fifth race).
The Stewards enquired into the circumstances surrounding the late arrival of the second ambulance prior to racing which caused a delay to the start of racing.
Evidence was heard from Mr. T.V. O’Connell, Turf Club Clerk of the Course, who stated that he had informed the Stewards prior to racing that only one ambulance was present when racing was about to commence. In accordance with his responsibilities, he said he was unable to comply with his check list which defines that he must ensure that two ambulances be in place before racing commences.
Evidence was also heard from Lt. Joe Earls, 2nd in Command of the Order of Malta, who stated that his organisation get a seasonal list with fixtures and start times and any subsequent changes are notified by phone from Limerick racecourse. He was satisfied that his organisation was not notified of the 12.45 pm start time and so they worked according to the advertised time of 1.30 pm and arrived in good time based on that assumption.
Evidence was also heard from Mr. Russell Ferris, Manager of Limerick Racecourse, who was of the opinion that his office had notified the Order of Malta this week to alert them of the rescheduled starting time.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that there was a communication breakdown and advised Mr. Ferris that contact in writing should be made about seven days prior to any fixture and any subsequent changes to starting times must be notified immediately.
297A Martinstown Opportunity Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Charles Byrnes, trainer, and B.C. Byrnes, rider of Milborough, unplaced, regarding the running and riding of this horse.
B.C. Byrnes reported that his mount was unable to go any faster, that he pushed him from the third last flight and that the horse stayed on in the straight without the whip being applied. He felt that the gelding needs at least two and a half miles and heavy underfoot conditions to be effective.
Mr. Keith Schous, Authorised Representative for Mr. Byrnes, confirmed the rider’s thoughts and added that this gelding had not suffered any abnormalities in the past which would affect his racing performance.
Having considered the reports, the Stewards noted the explanations offered. In view of the report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that Milborough was found to be coughing post race, the Stewards took no further action.
M.N. Doran, rider of Zafaraban, trained by Mr. Anthony Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran green and jumped left throughout.
297B Britain V Ireland Ladies Challenge Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed Miss J.M. Mangan, rider of the winner Luke’s Benefit, concerning her use of the whip from the final hurdle.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that she was unaware that she was clear of her opponents and failed to check at any stage. She also accepted that her whip had made contact with her mount in an unacceptable place.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Miss Mangan was in breach of. R10 (2)(c)and (e), in that she unnecessary hit her mount when the race was clearly won and the intentional hitting of her mount in a forbidden area. Having taken her clean record in this regard into account, the Stewards cautioned the rider for the future.
The Stewards interviewed Miss M. O’Sullivan, rider of Barneys Honour, unplaced, concerning her use of the whip in the closing stages when out of contention.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Miss O’Sullivan was in breach of. R10 (2)(b), in that she continued to hit her mount after the horse’s change of winning or being placed had clearly gone. Having taken her clean record in this regard into account, the Stewards cautioned her for the future.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Our Nana Rose, trained by Mr. Patrick Martin, was found to be coughing post race.
297C Winter Wonderland Maiden Hurdle & D.J. Bates, rider of Coldstonesober, trained by Mr. J.R. Finn, reported to a Turf Club Official that his mount lost its action, felt slightly lame on pulling up, but was subsequently found to be post race normal.
297D Newton Abbot Races Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed A.P. Crowe, rider of the winner The Lady Granuaile (USA), concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that this filly needs to have her mind made up for her and jinked left on the approach to the final hurdle suggesting that she might run out. He admitted, however, that from the final hurdle he had used the whip in a rapid manner and failed to give his mount a fair chance to respond.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that A.P. Crowe was in breach of. R10 (3), in that he failed to give his mount a chance to respond. Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore cautioned him for the future.
The Stewards interviewed Miss A.B. O’Connor, rider of De Dodger, placed second, concerning her use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that she is familiar with this gelding and was also aware that the horse idles in front. Consequently she said she tried to avoid hitting the front until late and wanted company. However, she said the winner jinked to the left at the final flight and she was left well apart from her challenger at that point. She admitted that she had used her whip rapidly.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Miss O’Connor was in breach of. R10 (3), in that she failed to give her mount a chance to respond. Having taken her previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore cautioned her for the future.
297F Garryowen Handicap Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed S.W. Jackson, rider of Florida Express, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip after his mount made a bad mistake in the back straight.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his mount had made a number of mistakes up to that point, but that he hit this fence particularly hard. He felt that a few hits down the shoulder might encourage his mount to be more decisive.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that S.W. Jackson was in breach of R10(3), in that he failed to give his mount a chance to respond. Having taken his previous good record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore severely cautioned him for the future.
