279E Christmas Parties At Punchestown Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed Mr. Oliver McKiernan, trainer of Itdosnot Botherme, and Quietly Fancied, regarding the late arrival of his horses into the Parade Ring for this race.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that he had a runner in the previous race and T.J. Doyle, rider, had to change the tack and weigh out for Quietly Fancied. He added that there were not any unusual delays on his part as he saddled both of his charges. He added that both animals were returning after long layoffs and that one of them was a little difficult. He stressed that he carried out all correct saddling procedures and had the rider’s safety at the forefront of his mind.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that Mr. McKiernan was in breach of Rule 32 (ii) and they therefore severely cautioned him concerning his responsibilities in this regard for the future.

Crowe, compared with the horse’s previous run at Ballinrobe on 21st August where he finished last of eight finishers and was beaten about fifty two lengths by the winner Stakers.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that the gelding was a reasonable hurdler who had previously failed to win, but his consistent form earned him a rating of 103. He added that his qualifying runs over fences were reasonable, but that he disappointed in his first handicap steeplechase at Navan. He said the horse then reverted back to hurdling and ran two satisfactory races before returning for a handicap steeplechase at Ballinrobe after a break. However, the said the animal disappointed that day on the faster ground and was unable to go with the pace. Following this run the horse was returned home to his owner’s premises for a three week break. He said since his return back to training the animal has improved in his homework. The trainer concluded by saying that the horse had his desired going conditions today having previously performed well on similar ground.
Evidence was also heard from Mr. Andrew Shaw, Turf Club National Hunt Handicapper.

Mr. de Bromhead reported that the horse disappointed at Listowel where he ran freely and failed to see out the two and a half mile trip on very testing ground. The trainer added that the horse settled much better in front today and seemed to appreciate the better ground conditions and the drop to two miles.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

Gray was in breach of Regulation 10 2(b) in that he continued to hit his mount after the horse’s chance of winning or being placed had clearly gone. 284A Casey Concrete Gorey Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Mister Music Man, ridden by J.R. Barry, and trained by Mr Patrick J. Flynn.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and from Mr. Michael Gunn, Authorised Representative for Mr. Flynn.
In his evidence J.R. Barry stated that Mr. Flynn was out of the country but had instructed him to jump off in mid division, get his mount jumping, creep into the race and ride to finish as best as possible. He added that his mount had shown plenty of ability in his earlier days and had won a bumper at Downpatrick, but, switched to hurdes, he was most disappointing especially in his previous race at Gowran Park. He said that the horse jumped off towards the rear today and travelled well until the top of the hill. He said he drove that horse at that point, but he emptied going to the second last flight. At that stage he said he gave his mount a nudge to quicken, but the animal had nothing to offer and he sat up before the final flight. In conclusion he said he drove his mount from the last to the winning post, but that in his opinion this gelding is of limited ability.
In his evidence Mr. Gunn stated that the instructions were as given. He confirmed that the gelding looked impressive when winning his bumper. He said the animal works well at home and has not experienced any veterinary problems of note. He added that he is very familiar with this gelding’s career and could only express overall disappointment since his only victory. He was satisfied with J.R. Barry’s riding and considered that the grazes received in running were of no consequence and that the post race normal report was an acceptable veterinary assessment.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that Mister Music Man was found to be post race normal except for some grazes on his left fore cannon and right carpus.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that the trainer and rider were in breach of Rule 212.
The Stewards therefore suspended J.R. Barry for seven race days (13th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 20th, and 24th November) and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. In addition the Stewards fined Mr. Flynn 1,000 euro, through his Authorised Representative, and suspended Mister Music Man for 42 days.

284B Casey Concrete Blocks Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed M.J. Ferris, rider of Caspian Piper, unplaced, concerning his riding from the final bend to the winning post after it appeared that his mount hung and was about to be pulled up, but continued in the race, jumped the final flight poorly and was hit once on the run-in when out of contention.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his mount had chased the leaders to the final bend, but began to hang badly at that point and was running very green. He felt that his mount was well capable of finishing so he steadied him going to the final flight to give him a chance to jump it. He said after landing over that obstacle the horse began to run on when another competitor joined him, so he hit the horse once as a corrective measure after taking a fresh hold and the animal reacted positively.
Evidence was also heard from Mr. M.F. Morris, trainer.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.

Carberry, Gates Of Rome, ridden by D.N. Russell, placed second, and Mackeys Forge, ridden by R. Loughran, placed fifth, after it appeared the latter ran short of room and had to check.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards took no further action.
