Curragh Meeting, 26th May 2012

120C Emirates Equestrian Federation Handicap & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Jamesie, ridden by C. O’Donoghue, and trained by Mr. David Marnane.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence Mr. Marnane stated that his instructions to the rider were to get cover early as the horse can often run free, to get into the race thereafter and to do his best.
In his evidence C. O’Donoghue confirmed the trainer’s instructions, stating that he has ridden this horse before and that the animal often takes a keen hold. He said he got his mount covered up early as instructed, but when he looked for a split between runners, his horse had raced too closely onto heels preventing him from steering him into a challenging position.  He said he was forced to sit and suffer as no opportunity arose to deliver a challenge. Eventually, in the final furlong when the race was gone beyond the horse, he left him alone. The trainer further stated that this horse is ridden in a crossed noseband and a chifney bit due to being keen and he felt the horse may also have been a little revved up following his recent run at Chester.  He expressed himself satisfied with the ride. In conclusion the trainer said that a drop back in trip to seven furlongs may be of benefit to his charge.

O’Brien, compared with the horse’s previous run at Newmarket on the 5th May where he finished 17th of 18 runners and was beaten 37 lengths and was behind Hermival, Trumpet Major and Born To Sea with whom he reversed placings today.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that Power (GB) was having his first run of the season at Newmarket on ground softer than he handled last year. He said the horse ran well for the first half of the Newmarket race, but tired in the latter stages possibly as a result of the ground. He added that Power (GB) raced today at the same body weight as he had at Newmarket and that all routine post race examinations failed to show any abnormalities.  He further added that J.P. O’Brien, rider, was not tied to any instructions today and rode the horse as he found him based on advice from R.L. Moore, who partnered the animal at Newmarket.
Evidence was also heard from Mr. Garry O’Gorman, Turf Club Handicapper, who stated that Power (GB) was one of the highest rated two year olds in Europe in 2011 and, apart from his disappointing run at Newmarket, was entitled to be a leading player today.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the trainer’s explanations.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Trumpet Major, trained by Mr. Richard Hannon (in GB), was found to be coughing post race.
