108A Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Mares Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Roger Joseph McGrath, trainer of the winner Thynetocatcher, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge particularly compared with the horse’s previous run at Fairyhouse on the 8th April where she pulled up in the race won by Shadow Eile.
Mr. McGrath reported that he was very disappointed with the mares run at Fairyhouse, but that he was at a loss to explain why she ran so badly. He reported that   nothing came to light following an examination by his Vet after the race. The only possible explanation that he could offer was that she jumped badly at Fairyhouse in a better class race, could not get competitive and lost interest. He said that his mare jumped better today in a lower grade race and this may explain the apparent improvement.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

The Stewards fined Mrs Denise Foster, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of My Cool Lady, in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.

108D Keg Security Tralee Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding (Rule 212) of Wakhan, ridden by B. Hayes, and trained by Mr. John Joseph Hanlon.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence B. Hayes stated that his instructions were to drop his mount out and try to get him to finish out his race, something he failed to do last time out at Limerick when  he was ridden handily. He said he got his mount to settle and the horse travelled well down the back straight. He said he tried to get Wakhan to run on for him in home straight but the horse threw his head up in his face when he asked him to quicken. He said the horse is ungenuine and resents being hit with the whip so he just tried to coax him home as best as he could without resorting to the whip.
In his evidence Mr. John Joseph Hanlon confirmed these instructions and explained the background to this horse. He said he has lots of ability but is ungenuine. He tried blinkers on the horse last time but he resented them. He said he felt the animal ran better today with cheekpieces applied. In addition he said the horse jumped better today over this trip. He also stated that his future aim was to win a race with the horse over a trip of around two miles and six furlongs on goodish ground and to have him ridden a bit more prominently than he was today. He expressed satisfaction with the ride considering how high the horse put his head in the air in the home straight. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that Wakhan was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards gave both the rider and trainer the benefit of the doubt while noting the explanations offered.

Mullins, trainer of Catleen, and informed him that a reoccurrence of such behaviour may render the horse liable for suspension in the future.

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Caolaneoin, placed fifth, ridden by T.J. Doyle, and trained by Mr. Seamus Fahey.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence T.J. Doyle stated that his instructions were to pop out handy and do the best he could from there. He said the horse jumped the first few fences very ordinary in third or fourth position, but then carted him to the front. He said his mount hung badly right on the bend past the stands and then made a bad mistake at the first fence down the backstraight. He stated that the horse continued to hang right and jump poorly so, on leaving the backstraight, he eased his mount down because he was having difficulty trying to steer him. He said that he wanted to do what was best for the horse and to ensure he did not fall because it was his first start over fences, but the animal was not tired enough to be pulled up. He stated that his mount passed tired horses in the home straight, but that in hindsight, if he was to ride the race again, he would have pulled him up at the end of the backstraight.
In his evidence Mr. Fahey confirmed the instructions. He said that the horse had schooled well, but that he was disappointed with his jumping today. He said his charge had not hung in his hurdle races and that today’s ground was as good as he had encountered to date. He said that he is a keen going sort at home and expressed satisfaction with the ride considering that the horse jumped indifferently and hung.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that Caolaneoin had sores on his lips but was otherwise found to be post race normal. Mr. Fahey was satisfied that these sores were of no significance as they are normal for this horse.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards gave both the trainer and rider the benefit of the doubt, while noting the explanations of Mr Fahey. In addition the Stewards severely cautioned T.J. Doyle to be seen to make more of an effort in future.

B.J. Cooper, rider of Big Generator (GB), trained by Mr. Paul Nolan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that he pulled his mount up as he thought the horse was lame, but the animal came back sound. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (31st May).
