046E Captain Paddy Graham Order Of Malta Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed B.M. Cash, rider of the winner Wise Oscar, concerning his use of the whip from the third last hurdle.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that this gelding was fitted with cheekpieces today as he is not genuine, is inclined to run in snatches and has been known to be a reluctant starter and racer in the past. He said the animal kept responding to his urgings from the third last, but was idling a little going to the final hurdle. He added that the fall of Jack Deine at the last hurdle gave his mount a change of attitude and he began to race strongly and responded well.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that B.M. Cash had used his whip with excessive frequency and had also breached Regulation 10 (3)(a) by failing to give his mount time to respond. Having taken his good previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards suspended him for one race day (7th April).

Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and from Mr. J. Titley, Authorised Representative for Mr. Glynn.
In his evidence P. Townend stated that he was instructed to jump off in sixth or seventh place and to finish as close as possible. In running he stated that all went well until the third hurdle where his mount made a very bad mistake which caused the horse to lose both confidence and momentum. This, he said, left him further back in the race than he had intended to be. Furthermore, he added that his mount jumped deliberately and to his right all the way down the back straight and was merely staying on past tired horses in the home straight.
In his evidence Mr. Titley confirmed the instructions and added that the mistake at the third hurdle effectively put the horse out of the race and also stated that he would expect some improvement from the horse, particularly when stepping up in trip, although he would need to jump more fluently than he did in today’s race. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that Kilvoydansouth, was found to be post race normal, but had lost his off hind shoe in running.
