Swan (fifth race) and Mr. M.P. Fogarty replaced Mr. P.F. Fogarty (printing error) on Ample Appeal, trained by Mr. P.J. Rothwell (sixth race).
338A Naas Racecourse On facebook Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Mountain Close, ridden by P.D. Kennedy, and trained by Mr. Mark Michael McNiff.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and also from Mr. J.J. Gerard, Authorised Representative for Mr. McNiff.
In his evidence P.D. Kennedy stated that his instructions were to take his time and ride his horse to finish as well as he could. In running he stated that his mount was keen early and also ran in snatches away from the stands. Furthermore he added that mistakes at the third and fourth last caused the horse to lose momentum. He also stated that he was unable to be as strong as he would have wished in the home straight as his mount was hanging badly left and he was forced to keep a tight hold on the rein with his right hand in order to avoid causing interference to the horses on his inside.
In his evidence Mr. J.J. Gerard confirmed the instructions and added that he was of the opinion that P.D. Kennedy had ridden to instructions. Furthermore he stated that this horse had never hung before in his work at home and added that he felt that the animal has some ability and shapes like a stayer in the making.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that Mountain Close was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mountain Close had not been allowed to run on its merits and that P.D. Kennedy and Mr. Mark Michael McNiff were in breach of Rule 212. Having taken their respective records into in this regard account, the Stewards fined Mr. McNiff €2000, though his Representative, and suspended P.D. Kennedy for 14 race days (24th, 26th, 27th,and 31st March, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 21st, 24th and 25th April). The Stewards also ordered that D.P. Kennedy forfeit his riding fee, while they also suspended Moutain Close from racing for 60 days.
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Scottish Boogie, ridden by P.T. Enright, and trained by Mr. C. Byrnes.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence P.T. Enright stated that his instructions were to drop his mount in and get him to settle as he had been very free on his two previous runs over hurdles. In running he stated that the horse ran free until eventually settling after jumping three hurdles, that he was forced to run wide on the turn for home, made a mistake at the second last, landed awkwardly and weakened thereafter. Furthermore, he stated that the animal has more speed than stamina and may struggle to get the two mile trip over hurdles.
In his evidence Mr. Byrnes confirmed the instructions and stated that he has been disappointed with the horse’s first two starts over hurdles where he ran free on both occasions. He added that he may never properly get the two mile trip over hurdles and had not ruled out a return to racing on the flat, but was hopeful that in time on better ground and a stronger pace he may eventually learn how to relax properly over hurdles.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Scottish Boogie was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recoridng of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
P.T. Enright, rider of Scottish Boogie, trained by Mr. C. Byrnes, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran free early on, made a mistake two hurdles out and weakened thereafter.
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Cartron Lady, ridden by M.J. Ferris, and trained by Mr. D. E. Fitzgerald.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence M.J. Ferris stated that his instructions were to jump off in last place as this mare is particularly free both at home and on the track and indeed had proved difficult to ride at Listowel on her first start for Mr. Fitzgerald when ridden by P. Townend. In running he stated that she was free throughout, improved her position after four out, ran wide turning for home and weakened approaching the last hurdle when she had nothing left to offer after taking too much out of herself during the race.
In his evidence Mr. Fitzgerald confirmed the instructions and expressed satisfaction with the ride. He added that this mare may never reach her full potential until she learns to settle and may be best suited to racing on quick ground in her own company on a sharp track.
Following the running of this race Cartron Lady was examined by the Turf Club Vet Officer and was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards accepted the explanations offered.
M.J. Ferris, rider of Cartron Lady, trained by Mr. D.E. Fitzgerald, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran very free, was forced wide turning for home, made a mistake two hurdles out and weakened approaching the last. He also stated that this horse may need quicker ground.

338E Tote Daily Double Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of That’ll Do Me, ridden by Ms. K. Walsh, and trained by Mr. T.M. Walsh.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In her evidence Ms. Walsh stated that her instructions were to take her time and ride her mount to finish well bearing in mind that the horse has failed to get home in his previous races to date. In running she stated that her mount was on and off the bridle throughout, stepped at the third last, gave a heave turning for home and stayed on one paced from thereafter.
In his evidence Mr. Walsh confirmed the instructions and expressed satisfaction with the run and the ride and added that he was satisfied with the fashion in which his charge finished the race after proving disappointing in all his races thus far.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that That’ll Do Me was found to be post race normal.
