Part-Time Racing Official - Clerk Of The Course

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) is the Regulatory Body for horseracing in Ireland. The role of the IHRB is to safeguard the integrity and reputation of Irish horseracing and to make and enforce the Rules of Racing. It is also responsible for the licensing of all participants in Irish racing. Adherence to the Rules of Racing on raceday is overseen by the Raceday Stewards.
The IHRB now seeks to recruit a Part-Time Clerk of the Course (Northern based) who will report to the Raceday Operations Manager. The person appointed will carry out the role of Clerk of the Course, liaising closely with Racecourse Managers, HRI and other stakeholders, to ensure course suitability for racing and optimise the safety of our human and equine participants. This is an interesting and varied position which will suit somebody who wants to play a meaningful ongoing role in horseracing.
Typical Duties:
- Overseeing the general arrangements of a race meeting to ensure that the requirements as set out in the Rules of Racing and Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Rules are in place.
- Pre-racing Inspections of the course to determine its suitability for racing.
- Advising on track layout and ground related matters.
- Advising on race programmes.
- Provision of advice to Raceday Stewards as required.
- Any other related duties or roles as required by the organisation.
In addition, the Clerk of the Course will offer strategic and developmental advice on behalf of the IHRB to racecourses when required.
The Person:
To be considered for this position you must be a motivated and proactive individual with a passion for horseracing. You will have excellent inter-personal and communication skills with the ability to build strong working relationships across the organisation, plus a strong work ethic and meticulous attention to detail. Flexibility is essential, with willingness to go “above and beyond” when needed. The role is based across a number of racecourses and, as racing is a seven-day sport, will require availability on evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.
Education, Knowledge & Experience:
- Third-level education an advantage.
- Thorough knowledge of horseracing with detailed knowledge of racing ground conditions.
- Understanding of the Rules of Racing and Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Rules.
- Strong communication skills to be able to engage with key stakeholders.
- Good computer knowledge and general IT skills.
- Full Driving License and use of own vehicle
Annual salary range based on 104-day contract (average 2 days/week) is €28,000 - €30,000, depending on relevant experience. Travel & subsistence allowances will be paid in line with organisational policies and other approved expenses will be reimbursed. This is a fixed term contract up until 31st December 2025.
