145A Happy Retirement (M) Opp. M'dn H'dle

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Go Gill Go, ridden by P.K. Donovan, and trained by James Grace. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. P.K. Donovan, stated that he was instructed to jump off midway to rear of the field and depending on the pace, he was to creep into the race and ride the filly as he found her. In viewing the video he stated that he was happy with his mount throughout as she had a good position and jumped well. He added that on entering the final circuit he sat as he did not want to rush her. He pointed out that about three furlongs out his mount was impeded by a loose horse and from that point he allowed her to increase her pace. He felt that he had got his best placing having been instructed not to use the whip on her as she had been difficult to get to the track, this being her second run ever having been in training for two years. James Grace, trainer, confirmed the instructions and stated that he had further instructed the rider not to use the whip as he had previously trained the dam and found her to be difficult. He was satisfied with the ride. The Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer who stated that Go Gill Go had a slight nasal discharge and was having a good blow post race. Samples were taken for analysis. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations and advised P.K. Donovan concerning his responsibility to be seen to make more of a substantial effort even when instructed not to use the whip. .

145G Dr. Louis O'Carroll (P-A) INH Flat Race

The Stewards interviewed Mr J.C. Barry, rider of Nancy Wyse, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. In his evidence Mr J.C. Barry stated that his mount was lugging out in the last one and a half furlongs and he was trying to keep his mount straight. He admitted that he had misjudged how many times he had used his whip in the latter stages. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr J.C. Barry was in breach of R10(3)(g) by using his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his previous record into consideration, the Stewards suspended Mr J.C. Barry for two racedays.

Mr B. O'Neill, rider of Colemanstown Lad trained by Martin Brassil, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount raced very free throughout this race.
