The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Costly Diamond, ridden by P.J. Cawley, and trained by Patrick G.Kelly. Evidence was heard from the rider and the trainer's representative, Ms. K. Scott. P.J. Cawley, stated that his instructions were to take his time, fill his mount with confidence as she had burst blood vessels previously. In the race he travelled well, his mount leaned in at times and he was holding her together. He didn't want to let her down. She can get lit up. He wanted to get her relaxed so she wouldn't burst blood vessels again. She settled well. Latched on at times. Jumped well in a race he felt was run at a good even gallop. She came under pressure for a few strides entering the back straight. She flattened out down the back and he stated that he held her together to see out her race. She started to lean-in entering the straight and at this stage he stated that he held her together and popped the last safely. When questioned by the Stewards whether he understood the provisions of Rule 212 (ii) and his obligations under that rule he stated that he did. The trainer's representative confirmed the instructions given to the rider. She stated that the mare burst blood vessels at Ballinrobe and Paul was made aware of that. That was at the forefront of the instructions given. The Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer which stated that the horse was examined and found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found that a breach of Rule 212A (ii) had taken place and imposed a fine of €2000 on the trainer, suspended the rider for 10 race days and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee and suspended the horse from running for 42 days.
