The IHRB is the Racing Regulatory Body for horseracing in Ireland. Under the Horse Racing Ireland Act 2016, the IHRB is responsible for ensuring the provision of on-course integrity services by employing horseracing officials including Medical Officers.
Due to the upcoming retirement of the current IHRB Senior Medical Officer, the IHRB is now seeking to fill the position.
The Senior Medical Officer will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the IHRB.
Purpose
The Senior Medical Officer is responsible for the supervision of all riders and for the provision of advice on medical matters to the directors.
The Senior Medical officer will work with other raceday officials and other stakeholders in the delivery of the integrity service on Irish racecourses and will report regularly on this to the CEO.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provision of oversight, advice, recommendations and strategic assistance on all aspects of medical related issues including safety equipment, minimum licensing standards etc.
- Provision of information to the CEO to assist and support the overall strategic plan in a timely manner while working to identify cost efficiency opportunities in the delivery of the medical service
- Liaising with third party service providers and trade associations in relation to areas of responsibility
- Recommendations on the setting of policies and standards for the medical supervision of riders
- To ensure that the highest standards of medical care and criteria are applied to all riders
- Setting standards for medical facilities on racecourses
- Overseeing of the IHRB and INHSC research programme
- Liaising with and setting of standards for third party service providers such as the Order of Malta etc.
- Setting of standards for and liaising with Racecourse Medical Officers
- Updating of Racecourse Medical Officers Handbook
- Medical clearance of riders as required
- Organisation of training courses
- Identification of key objectives for staff and implementation and promotion of a strong communications ethic between medical officers and other raceday staff
- Advocating on behalf of the IHRB at committee meetings or other fora in relation to the policies, views and reforms of the Regulatory Bodies when required
Key Requirements
- Be a qualified doctor with 10 years+ experience
- Have a Membership or Fellowship in your primary area of practice
- Knowledge of horseracing
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills allied with proven evidence of leadership, management and supervisory experience
