Ballinrobe Meeting, 18th July 2011

176A Paddy Smyth Memorial Maiden & The Stewards interviewed D.E. Mullins, rider of Clarach, and trained by Mr. Anthony Mullins, concerning his riding inside the final furlong when he was clear in second place and appeared to ease in the latter stages thus losing that placing close to the finish.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his mount travelled well throughout and challenged the winner around the final bends. However, having hit his mount once with the whip, he got no response and he squeezed and pushed the horse until he realised close to the line that he was being challenged for second place. He added that the horse had emptied under him. As a last attempt, he tried to get a final response when challenged, but his mount was unable to find anything.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.E. Mullins was in breach of Rule 212 in that he failed to give his mount a full opportunity of obtaining her best possible placing. The Stewards therefore suspended him for five race days and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee.

Mr. Brennan reported that his charge, not for the first time, disappointed him at Kilbeggan and that this is a track the horse obviously dislikes. Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.

178A Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden & The Stewards received a report from Mr. P.F. Graffin, Turf Club Starter, regarding the fact that Julie Moss became fractious at the start, which necessitated her withdrawal. While in the process of withdrawing the horse, Mr. Graffin lost his footing on the steps of the rostrum and this irregular movement seemed to activate the opening of the stalls, without the mechanism having been touched. Mr. Graffin then called a false start and the horses returned to the start. He subsequently had the stalls successfully tested before commencing the reloading.
Having considered the report, the Stewards accepted the explanation offered.

He said that even before he ran the animal he felt he looked like the type of horse that needed a longer trip and even considered sending him hurdling. He felt the horse did not handle the ground at Ballinrobe over one mile and six furlongs, while in relation to the Bellewstown run, he was of the opinion that his charge ran satisfactorily over the one mile and four furlong trip in what he considered to be a competitive race.
