124G Croom House Stud Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Rebel Fitz (FR), placed second, ridden by Mr. M.J. O’Connor, and trained by Mr. Michael Winters.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence Mr. O’Connor stated that his instructions were to settle his mount in fifth or sixth place, try be upsides at the second last hurdle and do his best from there. He said the horse settled and travelled in fifth or sixth and when the winner kicked on with a circuit to go, he felt he was going as fast as he wanted on ground that he felt was quick enough for his mount. He held onto his mount and when he went after the leader the horse did not pick up as expected and was maybe feeling the ground. He said it probably looked worse on the recording of the race because the winner was easing at the finish and so was the third. He felt his mount did not really quicken and was just staying on at the same pace.
In his evidence Mr. Winters confirmed the instructions and said his charge is a buzzy sort who needs to be covered up. Commenting on the race, he felt the winner had slipped the whole field.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations from Mr. Winters, but felt that Mr. O’Connor had ridden injudiciously. Having taken his record in this regard into account, they therefore suspended Mr. O’Connor for three race days (19th, 20th and 21st June).
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Rebel Fitz (FR), trained by Mr. Michael Winters, was found to be post race normal.
The Stewards interviewed D.J. Casey, rider of Worldly Wise (GB), placed third, regarding his riding in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his horse is a doubtful stayer who does not really see out the two mile trip. He also stated that he was reluctant to chase after the leading horse too soon because his mount would fail to get home. Turning for home, he said he went after the leader, but could not close the gap and was readily passed on the run in by Rebel Fitz (FR) to finish clear third. He felt under the circumstances, he had obtained his best finishing position.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Worldly Wise (GB), trained by Mr. Patrick J. Flynn, was found to be post race normal.
