Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence R. Walsh stated that he was advised by the trainer that this horse had won on the flat and would be keen. His instructions today were to take his time, get the horse settled and produce him from off the pace. During the race the horse ran keen and jumped big early on, but dropped the bridle going past the winning post first time. From there on he niggled at the horse, but the animal did not want to make up ground going up the hill. When reaching that point, he asked his horse for an effort and felt that he picked up and came back on the bridle. He said his mount passed a number of horses, which included some that were tiring, but the race was gone from him at that stage. In his opinion the horse wants two and a half miles.
In his evidence Mr. Martin confirmed the instructions and added that the horse had a previous pelvic injury for which he had box rest for some time, but has strengthened up since then and has plenty of speed. He felt that through deliberate jumping the horse lost his chance early on which meant that he was too far out of his ground through no fault of the rider. It is his opinion, that the horse would still be capable of racing over the minimum trip of two miles.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that the horse was found to be post race normal.
