The Raceday Stewards interviewed A.J. Slattery, rider of Smooth Tom, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. In his evidence, A.J. Slattery admitted that he had exceeded the whip guidelines for frequency. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards were of the opinion that A.J. Slattery was in breach of R10(3)(g) by using his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his previous record into consideration, the Raceday Stewards suspended A.J. Slattery for one raceday.
The Raceday Stewards interviewed Adrian McGuinness, trainer of Finans Bay, concerning the conduct of this horse who refused to race when the starting stalls opened. The trainer stated that he brought his charge to the Curragh training grounds twice earlier this week and he trialled out of stalls perfectly. He added that he attended the start himself today and observed his charges reaction when the runners began to load into the starting stalls. Having viewed the recording of the start, considered the evidence and noted that Adrian McGuinnes was advised here on the 25th March that Finans Bay could be liable to a suspension should he repeat similar behaviour in the starting stalls, the Raceday Stewards using their powers under Rule 14 (iii), suspended Finans Bay for thirty days.
The Raceday Stewards requested a report from Paul W. Flynn, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of Timourid, placed first, as compared with its recent run at Leopardstown on the 7th May when finishing fifteenth of nineteen runners to the winner Smooth Tom on soft to heavy ground. The trainer reported that he instructed R. Whearty, rider at Leopardstown, to drop his mount in off the pace that day but the animal may have sulked and may not have appreciated the sticky ground. As a consequence, he instructed the rider today to ride up with the pace. In his opinion, this change brought about the improved performance today. Having considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards noted the content of the report.
