302H Leopardstown Christmas Festival 2013 Mdn

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Sharlanda, ridden by I.J. Brennan, and trained by Daniel Miley. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. I.J. Brennan, stated that his instructions were that as this filly had been green on her last two runs he was to take his time and pass horses up the straight. She had been keen to post and keen early in the race. He began to make his effort before the turn in and kept on in the home straight under hands and heels. He rode her out as hard as he could without resorting to the whip as he had been instructed not to hit her. Daniel Miley confirmed the rider's instructions. He stated that this filly has been given a vigorous ride in her last two starts and swished her tail on her last run. She returned home after her previous start and was very agitated for a number of days which is why he was anxious for the whip not to be used today. He felt that by being ridden this way she had run much better than in her previous races. He expressed himself satisfied with the ride. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Sharlanda was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations but cautioned I. J. Brennan to be seen to make more of an effort in future.

Mr M. P. O'Donnell absented himself from this enquiry. Mr Philip Caffrey acted as Chairman of the Stewards.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Sharlanda, trained by Daniel Miley, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal. She was subsequently reported to be coughing and was examined again at the request of the trainers representative and found to have kick back in her trachea.
